What is the Best Fishing Lure?

Fishing Lures

Is there one fishing lure that’s better than all the others? In other words what is the best fishing lure? I think it would be impossible to say what the best lure is with all of the options available, but it would be possible to determine the best lure in a few categories of fishing lures. In this article I’m going to list the best lures in each of the categories listed. Armed with this information, you will be able to make a much more informed decision when searching for your next fishing lure.

Top Water – Top Water fishing lures are just what their name suggests. Fishing lures that are fished on top of the water. Top water lures produce some of the most exciting strikes imaginable. Catching fish with top water lures is, without question, as enjoyable as fishing gets. So what is the best lure when it comes to top water fishing? There are some great choices: the Heddon Zara spook, The Classic Popper, Strike King Worm, and many more. But the best lure in the top water arena has to be the Original Jitterbug.

Minnow Imitations – Minnow imitations are incredibly popular fishing lures and determining the best lure in this family of lures is a tall order. Minnow imitations are obviously fished below the surface. These lures are obviously designed to look like minnows. Again there are many great choices: the Storm Live Minnow Lure, Uncle Buck’s minnows, Blue-fox Vibrax minnow, plus many more. The best lure among all of the minnow imitations has to be the Rapala Original Floating Minnow.

Spinner baits – Spinner baits are kind of a combination between a jig and a spinner. These baits are incredible popular for bass fishing. When it comes to bass fishing lures, these lures can be as good as it gets. Spinner baits are also good baits for other predatory fish like northern pike. Because these particular fishing lures are so unique, yet simple it’s impossible to pick a particular kind of spinner bait.

Shad Imitations – Shad imitations are most popular among bass fishermen and are extremely effective in lakes in the southern United States where shad are a very plentiful forage fish. Just as with Spinner baits, shad imitations are most popular among bass anglers. Some of the more popular shad imitations are: the Northland Mimic Minnow Shad, the Shad Rap, and Strike King King Shad. The most realistic shad imitation and the best lure in the shad imitation family of fishing lures is the Kick Tail Lure

Hopefully this article gave you some insight into the wild and crazy world of fishing lures. When it comes to fishing lures, picking the best fishing lure is all but impossible. This article broke the various fishing lures down into families and then picked the best lure within each family. The ones we picked as the best have all been proven to be effective through more than 50 years of combined fishing experience.

Modify Your Fishing Lures for Big Bass

admin on Oct-21-2009

Its been a long cold winter. Cabin fever claimed some of my time, but not all of it. My most productive time was spent modifying bass lures. Think about it–when you can alter a lure and catch more bass on it, what could be more satisfying?

Like most of you, I spent a lot of time in front of the tube this winter. But, I learned to use this time to modify and alter some good Bass’n lures. Adding weight, custom painting, and re-shaping diving lips, are all good starting points.

Adding weight can accomplish several things. It can cause a lure to suspend or sink, increase casting distance, and add sound to a hollow plug. I use a bucket of water and steel BB’s, or lead shot, to tune lures for the desired effect. At first, I tape the weight to the lure to determine the right amount. Then I drill a hole in the lure to add the weight. My favorite way to fill the hole is hot-glue, followed by super-glue to seal any small holes. Very small adjustments can be made by using different sized hooks and split-rings. Don’t forget about Storm Lures suspend dots and strips. They can also cover a drilled hole, without re-painting the lure.

Custom painting lures is another good option. Your favorite lure isn’t available in the best color pattern? No problem!

I went to my local department store’s model-car section, and picked-up an airbrush kit. This type of kit can be found for less than $30. Mine included a can of air, or propellant, and 3 small paint bottles.  If you plan to use it more than I did, you can get one with a simple compressor.  Like this airbrush kit at Amazon. As for paint, I use regular model-car enamel. While in the dept. store, be sure to get some sandpaper, spray enamel, and measuring spoons. Spray enamel and sandpaper allow you to make mass-produced lures smoother and better. The measuring spoons will help you create and duplicate good colors. For example, my chartreuse color is 6 parts yellow to one part green. And, your wife will be happy that you didn’t swipe HER measuring spoons, another bonus!

With a little practice, you can create some very original color patterns. Diving lips are the business end of any crankbait. Longer lips cause the lure to dive deep, and shorter lips run shallow. Also, thinner lips dive deeper, due to less water resistance. My favorite trick is to “sharpen” a diving lip. A knife-blade edge on a diving lure, can increase diving depth. This works very well on metal-bladed crankbaits. But, on plastic-lipped lures, the depth increase may be short-lived, as the lip may wear-down, due to contacting cover. This is still OK, as all depths are productive, at some time or place.

All of these tips can help you catch more fish, of any species. Just experiment with your lures, to achieve a certain goal. If it’s weight, depth, or color, Just use these tips and your own experiences, to create the perfect lure. Don’t be afraid to try something new. It may be better than anything that is available.

Fishing Tips and Tricks for Clear Waters

admin on Oct-22-2009

Here are some tips and tricks to help you catch more fish from clear water fisheries. These tips will get you “Tuned-in”, regardless of the target species.

First off, clear water can be a blessing or a curse. Fish are easily spotted but usually hard to catch because if you can see the fish, they can see you. These tough conditions call for some special tricks. Anything you can do to keep the fish from seeing you or your line is important.

Some quick angler influenced options include:
reducing line visibility
reducing lure size
using natural colors
speeding up retrieves

My best clear-water rig, is a 6′ 6″ medium-light spinning combo (you can find many combos by clicking HERE), spooled with 8 lb mono. Top water plugs, shallow diving minnows, and soft jerk-baits are the best lure choices. Try to duplicate the color patterns of available forage. I try to use silver, white, and even transparent lures. Also, go for the smallest lures you have. A smaller lure is the best choice for spooky fish.

Wild colors can catch fish too, but they require a faster retrieve speed. Burn the lure through the water because you don’t want the fish to get a good look at it. This classic reaction-strike pattern is very effective. Don’t worry about setting the hook because a good strike will almost rip the rod from your hands. You’ll forget all the other options when you get this pattern to down.

Natural conditions such as time of day and wind direction are important as well. They can’t be changed, but you still have options. Try fishing the low-light hours and over-cast days. Try fishing the windy shore. Even small waves will mask your presence. A slight breeze on a blue-bird-day can be the difference between getting skunked and landing lunkers! Anything that will allow you to ambush your prey without being seen will improve your success.

Clear waters will always be a favorite of mine. I grew up fishing clear water sandpits, and I have been lucky enough to fish them at there best!

Are You Choosing the Right Type of Bait to Lure Your Fish?

admin on Nov-16-2009

By Puneet Singhal

When most people think of Bass Fishing Bait, what comes to mind is usually basic information that’s not particularly interesting or beneficial. But there’s a lot more to choosing the right Bass Fishing Bait than just the basics.

Most of this information comes straight from the Bass Fishing pros who know what type of the bait is best to lure your fish. Careful reading to the end virtually guarantees that you’ll know what they know.

How can you catch a big fish? How can you attract those fish when daytime? How can you have the best catch of your life? May be you need to seduce those fish to come into your fishing rod. But what you really need is the best fishing lure.

Fishing lures is very important to bass fishing because it will help you catch more fish or even win that very important fishing tournament. There are various types of lures that are used specifically for bass fishing. There are fishing lures each for use in luring small fish, for fish living in shallow waters, for fast swimming fish, for big and large fish as well as for a big-mouthed fish.

In Bass fishing you need to pull the fish’s attention towards you. Fishing lures help you to excite the fish awareness. Some of the lures contain a rotating and shaking action and it produces an overall thrill for the starving trout, pinfish or bass into a feeding emotion.

Some of the Bass fishing lures create a charm for the fish and works in wonders in catching your favorite fish. They come up with a multi-color design so that the fish can see the lures clearly and get attracted. A fish-like imitation also makes a fish swims fast towards it. This is one of the oldest form of fishing lures.

Other Bass Fishing lures are also designed to be thick in the middle and have a curve at the both edges to create an angle when it is soaked on the water. The design and its actions of the fish lures will also let you manipulate the fish and you will catch them in the easiest way.

To look more fashionable some of the fishermen have a different color for their fishing lures, like the silver, gold plated, red/white, firetiger, lightning flash, rainbow color, shades of red gold and the yellow slash.

Bass fishing lures comes in a different size; some of them are slender and thin, others are big with tiny edges, depending upon the size of the fish you want to catch. If you want to catch a small fish and the fishing lures you are using are very big the fish might think that it is a predator and he will not go to your hook. Fishing lures should also depend upon the size of the fishing hook.

Several of the Bass Fishing lures also vary in the weight, some fishing lures are ultra light and they are angled so that it will cause a spin. As an effect of the angel the fishing lure will be consistent on its action, it can also have the territorial defense against the instinct of the predator fish.

Added features to the lures like a life-like fish shape can also be a very effective way to catch the attention of the fish. These fishes have three-dimensional images that will make the lure look irresistible. Several types of life-like fish lures have sparkling eyes so that it would be easy for the fish to identify the lure and the fish will get tempted.

If you want to have deep fishing lures, those with tight design will exile, break and do better than any other crankbaits. Because of the features a wobbling effect in swallow water. Some of professional anglers add some blood on their crank baits so that hungry fish will immediately recognize it and swim towards the lure. Afterwards if the fish already take up the scent of blood, the fish will surely bite the hook.

You must choose the best way to attract the fish. It is not about fooling the fish, it is about thinking of the wisest idea in order for you to attract them.

Take time to consider the points presented above. What you learn may help you overcome your hesitation to take action. Go fishing!
